Ten New Galleries and Shops Join the Village of the Arts

“As we end our 10th year we have the pleasure of having a wide array of artisans joining the Village at the same time,” says Village president Kevin Webb.  With the addition of these new galleries and shops, the Village of the Arts now has 41 participating venues, making it one of Florida’s most unique attractions.

The Village is brimming with renewed energy and intriguing shops.  Visitors can find stained glass, photography, pottery, clothing, Mexican folk art, masks, paintings, sculptures, jewelry, candles, soaps, metaphysical offerings, copper fish, colorfully painted homes and more, all within a few blocks.  Visitors can meander through the Village listening to live music, noshing on delicious edibles, and enjoying a unique neighborhood where artisans live and work together.

The new galleries are:  10th Avenue West Studios, Alchemy, Arte Coyoacano, Blue Room Studios, Gwendolyn’s Gallery , Mystical Moon , Renewed Spirit Art, Un Gato Loco, Village Gem Shop, and The Alpha House.

Would you like to take a class in jewelry making, journal making, collage, faux finishing, stained glass, yoga, theater, polymer clay, painting, drawing, pottery, quilting or fiber arts?  Pick up a free Village guide at any of the galleries.  Artisans offer reasonably priced classes and workshops at individual studios and most classes are small with individualized attention.  Details are on the Village website.

Along with these galleries, the Village has planned fun events for their monthly ArtWalks on the first Friday evening  of each month.  November’s event will celebrate the Festival of the Skeletons.  December showcases charming streets bejeweled in twinkling lights, and the January ArtsWalk encourages visitors to tour each studio during the popular Village Studio Tour.  Details on the new businesses and upcoming events are on the website, www.villageofthearts.com.

Also coming in November is the Village’s new Welcome Center where visitors can stop in to pick up maps of the Village.  “It’s wonderful to be part of this Village”, says jewelry maker, Kristie Kindstrom, “everyone is so friendly and visitors love strolling through our little village and talking to artists as they work.”

Festival of the Skeletons in the Village of the Arts, Bradenton

The Village of the Arts, the Gulf Coast’s largest art community invites you to a joyous celebration of life at the 4th annual Dia de los Muertos, Festival of the Skeletons.  The event will take place during the monthly ArtWalk, Friday November 6 from 6-9:30pm and Saturday November 7 from 11am-4pm.  On Friday, November 6th the Village will be lit with luminaries and live Mexican music will be performed by Lady Z and Company.  Mexican food will be offered by Casa del Sol restaurant.

The centerpiece of the event will be the unveiling of a community shrine celebrating the lives of Mexican artists Frieda Kahlo and Diego Rivera. This traditional Dia del los Muertos shrine will be located on the corner of 12 Street and 11th Ave.

The public is invited to create a shrine honoring Khalo, Rivera or a loved one of their choice.  In keeping with the premise of the Day of the Dead, all shrines are to be joyous, as this is a celebration of someone’s life, not death.

Shrines are due no later than October 31st to Divine Excess gallery if they are to be included in the “shrine of shrines” on November 6th.

An open, juried show with the Dia de los Muertos theme will be on display at Still Life in G Gallery, 1014 12th St. W.  The event is free and open to all! Don’t miss this unforgettable weekend in celebration of the Mexican tradition.

The Village of the Arts is located 4 blocks south of Manatee Avenue  between 9th St. W. and 14th St. W.

Visit the website at www.villageofthearts.com or contact Zoe Von Averkamp, 941-746-4556, for detailed information about the event and shrine construction/delivery.

Cryptic Outlooks at Alchemy this February - Seeing Things Anew

Photographers Peter Bates and Cheryl Levin are featured this month in an exhibit entitled
Cryptic Outlooks.  Bates & Levin photograph outdoor urban and suburban locations, zeroing in on the most eye-catching aspects.  A run-down shed reveals its rust, with striking colors and textures. Weathered signs and RV vehicles emerge from their surroundings, revealing funky charm.  While offering different perspectives on similar themes, both find beauty in the out-of-the-way, the unusual, and the discarded. “Cheryl Levin focuses on the overlooked details you may encounter walking through your own neighborhood.” (Stylus).  “Bates’ images of buildings are both quirky and compelling.” (Views).  Bates & Levin’s work will be on display at Alchemy, 1215 12th Street West, Bradenton, FL 34205, in the Village of the Arts.  Hours are: Fridays and Saturdays 11 am till 4 pm, and by appointment.  Call 941-746-3508 for details.
